ニューヨーク行きの激安チケットを見つけた。

Found a super cheap ticket to NYC.

HISの人が「ここは対応が悪いことがあるので、うちではおすすめしていない」という、中国東方航空。

Even a cheap travel agent said 'We don't recommend this airline because of its bad customer service'. That was China Eastern Airline.

それでも５万円も安いので、乗ってみることにした。

But it was £400 cheaper. I gave it a shot.

上海での乗り継ぎのため、一泊することに。

That required me to stay one night in Shanghai.

こんなことは予定していなかったが、これが本当によかった。

I didn't plan to do it at all, but it was so great.

中国の経済成長、円安で、物価が高いかと思ったが、まだまだ安い！

I thought everything was expensive because of the economic growth of China and weak JPY.
But it was still quite cheap!

これは有名な丸い餃子みたいなやつ。相当でかい。これで１５０円くらい？

This is the famous dumplings. Huge. Maybe it's just £1?

噛むと中からアツアツの肉汁が出てきて、なかなかうまい。

As you eat, hot meat juice comes out of it into your mouth. Good.

でも、あまりに安くて量が多くて、これだけで満腹になってしまうので、
１個か２個で十分！

It's so cheap and huge. Just eat a piece or two otherwise you'll get too full.

さらに、これも１５０円くらいだったかな？
春雨ヌードル。酸味があって、色々な野菜の香りでうまい。

This was also £1 or so. Noodle.
Nice sour soup with complex vegetable/ herb flavour. Yum.

海外へ行くたび、現地のスターバックスのメニューをチェックすることにしているが、
なんと、ちまきのデザートが。

I always check what local Starbucks menu is like in a different country.
Now there was a sweet dumpling dessert wrapped in leaves. Wow.

これも安くて２００円くらい。そしてうまい。

This is also cheap. Around £1.5. And delish.

空港併設のホテルに泊まったので、

翌朝は朝６時から空いているフードコートへ。

Since I stayed at a hotel connected to the airport, next morning I just popped into the food court which is open from 6am.

これがまた最高に安くてうまい！

And that was sooooo cheap and scrumptious.

かぼちゃのペースト。暖かい。１００円。自然な味。

Pumpkin paste? Served warm. 60p or so. Natural taste.

そして、フルーツと、きくらげみたいなものが冷たいシロップに入っているもの。

Fresh fruit and some unfamiliar transparent ingredient in cold soup.

甘さが控えめで、夏に最高。毎日３食べたい。

Sweetness is quite subtle. Perfect for summer. I can eat it at every meal everyday.

すっかりChinese Dessertの大ファンになった。

Now I became a huge fan of Chinese desserts.

極めつけは、なんと機内食。

The best of all was surprisingly in-flight meal.

まったく期待していなかったが、このヌードルが最高。
地味にキクラゲやフルーツもうまい。

Didn't expect any good food, but this noodle was just superb.
And the side dish was also tasty.

空港からリニアモーターカーであっという間に繁華街に行けるし、本当に快適。

You can go to the downtown of Shanghai super quick on a maglev train. So convenient.

長年の文化、経済成長が組合わさったカオス、中国のパワーを感じた。

I felt the chaotic power of China, which has both long-term culture / history and its rapid economic growth.

また行きたい！

Off to NYC in less than a week.

ニューヨーク行きまで１週間を切った。

Again, living in the other countries is 3 times harder.

外国に住むのは、日本に住むより３倍辛いことがある。

There are always loads of difficulties and I will for sure feel miserable so often.

絶対にうまくいかないことがあるし、みじめな思いもするだろう。

But it's just 5 times more fun.

でも、５倍楽しい。

I always meet up with great people and encounter unbelievable experiences sooner or later. 

いつになるかは分からなくても、必ず素晴らしい人々と出会い、信じられないような経験が出来る。

I just trust in this theory and give it a shot to NYC!

勝手にそう思い込んで、行ってきます。

The best thing you can buy just for tenner.

やはり夏にはClimacoolだ、ということで、近所のプレミアムアウトレットへ。

Went to my local premium outlet shopping mall to grab Climacool Shoes for summer.

Climacoolは人気の定番モデルなので、なかなか値引きしないのが普通だが、
やはりここのアウトレットは価格破壊がすごい。

You don't normally find big discount on Climacool models since it's a popular and basic line.
But this outlet mall slash prices massively.

ほぼすべてのものが６割引。

Pretty much most of the products were around 60% off.

その中でもすごかったのは、Climacoolの去年のフラッグシップモデルが、なんと１５００円。１／８の価格。

And the biggest surprise of all was the flagship model of last year's Climacool line was just £10.
1/8 of the regular price.

Climacoolはあまりに快適なので、毎日履いてしまうので、あっという間にすり減ってしまう。
なにより、１５００円で買える靴なんて今時あるだろうか。

Climacool shoes are so comfy that I tend to wear them all the time, that makes them wear off so quickly.
And more importantly, how can you buy a pair of shoes just for £10?

というわけで、とりあえず１足買って、モールを歩いてみて、履き心地を確認。

So I bought a pair and walked around the mall to check how it feels.

いい感じなので、売り切れる前にもう一足買い足す。

Felt good and bought another pair before it sells out.

さらに、他の店を見たりして歩いて、やっぱりこれが１５００円は安過ぎると判断。

Walking around even more shopping at the other shops, again, I found it's a superb deal.

もう一足、また少し考えてもう一足、と買っているうちに、６足も購入！

Bought another, had a think, bought another... In the end I got 6 pairs!

すでに所有していた２足と合わせて、８足になった。

Including the two pairs that I already owned, it's now 8 pairs of Climacool shoes in total.

先日のポストにも書いたが、ラコステの美しいシャツを買った。

As I mentioned on the previous post, I bought beautiful Lacoste shirts.

ストレッチが効いていて、スリムフィットなので、体形が悪いと着ることが出来ない。

You can't wear those since it's stretchy and slim fit.

そして、偶然風邪を引いて食事が３日出来なかった。

And I happened to catch a cold at the same time, which made me not eat any food for 3 days.

というわけで、これを機にダイエットをすることを決意。

Therefore I decided to go on a diet.

今回は、エクササイズを増やすより、カロリー計算。これが効果大。

This time I don't go for extra exercise, but go for watching calories. This works super well.

食べる時に、必ずカロリーをネットで確認。

Every time I eat anything, I always check the calories on internet.

すると、意外なものがものすごいカロリーだったり、逆に少なかったり、新たな発見がある。

Then you'll find out surprising facts that some foods have unexpectedly massive calories or some has very little.

また、エクササイズで減るカロリー（ランニングは１km = 50kcal）、1kg体重を減らすカロリー（8000kcal)を覚えたのもよかった。

And that was great for me that I learnt how much calories I can burn by exercising (running 1km = 50kcal) and how much calories I need to burn to lose 1kg (8000kcal).

シナモンロール一個で１０００キロカロリー！

One cinnamon roll has nearly 1000kcal!

これ一個でハーフマラソンを走らなければいけない。

You gotta run a half marathon just for it.

また、サラダがドレッシングのせいで異常に高い。

And salad has massive calories because of oily dressing.

逆に言えば、努力せずとも、正しい知識に基づいて食事を制限すれば、体重管理など簡単だということ。

To put it the other way around, if you control your calories intake based on the nutrition science, it's easy to control your weight.

6 packsが戻るまでは、１日に必要なプロテイン６０gを、プロテインパウダー3杯で確保（250kcal)、という極端なことに挑戦する予定。

Until I get my 6 packs back, I will try an extreme plan, which is I only have 3 scoops of  protein powder (250kcal) to keep a recommended daily intake of protein (60g).

成功のコツは、何か食べる言い訳をとにかくしないこと。

The key to success is just make no excuse to eat anything else.

さっそく1週間で1kgやせて、最高に楽しい。

I've already lost 1kg in a week. So much fun.

そして、ものを食べなくなると、食費も時間も（買い物、調理、洗い物など）ものすごく浮くというのもかなりの発見。

In addition, it was also a big finding for me that eating nothing means no expense and no time consumption (shopping, cooking and clearing).

Levi's Commuter 511 Skinny Shorts

Bought a pair of shorts for my very first summer in NYC.

NYCでの初めての夏を楽しむために、ショーツを買った。

It's an item from Commuter Line of Levi's. Probably designed in Japan.

おそらく日本発の企画、Commuterラインのもの。

First of all, the color and the shape is so good.

何よりまず、色と形がとにかくいい。

The way they set the concept, design and choose the material is typical Japanese taste such as lots of stretchability, functional fabric, slim fit and reflection tape.

いかにも日本のチームが企画した感じで、

強めのストレッチやリフレクターのアクセント、機能素材の多様、スリムフィットなど、ニクいところをついてくる。

And it's so cheap.

価格もすごく安い。

Not a big fan of bright colours because it gets dirty easily, but it was just irresistible.

普通は汚れやすい色は買わないんだけど、これは買わないとね。

It's one of the best motivation for losing weight as well as the Lacoste shirts in the previous blog post.

ユーグレナ ２

以前のポストから、
１週間ほどがたち、ユーグレナの株価上昇は止まらない。

なんと、毎日ストップ高（たぶん）で３割も上昇。

当初の株価から数ヶ月で２５倍にもなった。

僕は本当は以前のポストの時、５０００円くらいの時に買いたかったのだけれど、
なぜか証券会社の口座開設手続きが遅く、買いそびれてしまい。

結局、泣く泣くあきらめた。

そしたら、今日は１６０００円を超えて、たった数時間で１１５００円まで急降下。

今時、ここまでのカオスな銘柄はなかなかないのでは。

そして、僕のポートフォリオの銘柄はほとんどが未だに上昇中。

ドワンゴなんて、上場したてでもないのに、二日で１．５倍にもなっている。
生放送の大イベントが成功し、テレビで取り上げられたせいだろうか。

いつの時代も、どこかに、カオスなチャンスはたくさん潜んでいるのである。

Bucket List

An Idiot Abroadが大好きで、見ていたら、

Series 2のサブタイトルが The Bucket List だった。

なんだろうと思ったら、「死ぬまでにやりたいこと」という意味。

数年前から、考えをまとめる時には、リストをざっと作っていたが、

最近、特にその重要性を感じる。

リストを作り、それに従って思考を整理すると、

盲点が見え、自分を客観視することが出来る。

そして、家族、学校、会社、日本、などの雑音から離れ、

世界と自分の残りの命という、本当のものを俯瞰して、

自分が何をすべきか、どう考えるべきかが見えてくる。

これから、死ぬまで、リストと向き合って、考えていこう。

Citi Bike in NYC

ロンドンに住み始めてすぐ、いまやロンドン名物になったBorris Bikeが始まった。

これは本当に最高で、毎年７０００円くらいの激安で、ロンドン中の自転車に乗り放題。

通勤に使うとものすごくお金が浮くし、何より、晴れた夏のハイドパークのサイクリングは天国。

そして、今度は、ちょうどNYCに住み始める頃に、Citi Bikeが始まるということだ。

マンハッタンだけでなく、ブルックリンもカバーするということで、
本当に最高だろうなあ！！

最高に楽しみ。

ユーグレナ

株価が４ヶ月で１０倍になっている！

素晴らしいのが、これは投機やマネーゲームではないということ。

学術的な信頼性、社会的な意義がはっきりしていし、

今後の人口爆発、食糧難の時代にマッチしている。

ITなどと比べ、バイオ分野での明るい話題が少ない日本。

久しぶりにいいニュース！

まともなことをしていれば、いつでもチャンスはある、といういい例だ。

８年かけて、大きな成果が咲いている。

JINS , Apple, Becoming an investor.

２０１２年の始め、ロンドンへ行く直前、JINSのメガネを購入した。

その時、これはすごいな、という印象を受け、ブログにそのことを書いた。

今日、何気なくJINSの株価を調べてみると、

２０１１年に上場し、２年で１０倍以上になっている！

iPod〜初代iPhoneの時期のアップルもそうだが、
僕が気になる企業は、ほぼ確実に成功する。

そして、為替の動向も、多少のずれはあれ、ほぼ予想通り。

当時は、「なんとなく怖い」という理由だけで投資を避けていた。

せっかく未来が見えているのに、行動していない。
本当にもったいない。

そして、こういうものに気づける人間は、ほとんどいないのではないか？

例えば、ハーバードビジネススクールを卒業したアメリカ人のエリートは、日本のマーケットのことは分からない。
JINSなんて知らないし、何がよいか、なぜ成功するか、分からない。

一方、日本で、一業種にとどまっている人間は、なかなか経済、投資の能力と、コンシューマーの嗜好の両方を分かる人材などいないだろう。

自分の弱みである、多様な国で、多様な経験をして、普通の人間の枠にはまらないということ、
それが、こういう時に活きるのだ。

こういうことが、自分の生きて行く道の一つだと、今、はっきり分かる。

僕の尊敬／共感する人物の一人に、Joi Itoがいる。

彼も、多様な国で、多様な経験をし、若い頃はそれなりに失敗や苦労もしていた。
そして、今はInvestorとして活躍している。

僕も、Investorになるべきだと痛感したので、口座を開設し、投資を始めることにする。
LinkedIn のプロフィールにも書き加えた。

ロンドンのアップル時代に、アメリカのE Tradeの口座も開設したし。

一歩前進。

My Second Birthday

Today is my birthday of the rest of my life.

Nothing happened. I just feel like thinking that way.

ジャーナリスト

過去5年くらいを振り返ってみると、
本当に色々なことがあった。

嫌なことや失敗も多かったが、
これほど色々なことを成し遂げられるとは思わなかった。

ポジティブに挑戦すれば、色々なことが出来る。

その中で、やらずに後悔していることも。

それがジャーナリストになること。
といっても、政治ではなく、アート、travel, food, etc. 雑誌でもブログでも、何でもよい。

刺激や共感を感じたら、実際行動に移さなければダメだ。

ニューヨークの遊び方、
Video workshop @ Apple Sydney,
Modern art museums,
Wallpaper city guide,
One to One,
Etc...

マネでもいい。
失敗してもいい。
結果出るか保証がなくてもいい。

そんなことは考えず、信じてやれば、
何かが必ず起きる。

今までも、周囲から無理と言われることを、
何度も実現させてきたから。

Beef Wellington @ Harrods

イギリス料金といえば、外せないのがこれ。

ただ、意外と食べられる場所、売ってある場所が少ない。

Wikipediaをのぞいてみると、
Harrods Food Hallから、
という写真が載せてある。

これは行くしかない、ということで。

ところが、初めて食べるので、
食べ方が分からない。

オーブンでreheatするか、冷たいままでもいい、
ソースはいらないが、ブラウンソースとか使ってもいい、
と売り子に言われたが、
イギリス人ではなさそうなので、
イマイチ信用できない。

Gravyという答が複数の同僚から、
そして、you tubeでもフレンチっぽい白いソースを使っていたり。

Red wine sauceというのも。

ただ、今のところ、Red wine gravy がベストかも。
James Martinもそう言っていることだし、鵜呑みにしておこう。


まずは160〜180度くらいで軽くreheat。

ソースなしでも、若干ドライだが全然いける。
塩加減もばっちり。

何より、さすがハロッズ。
肉がうまい！

ただ、
若干レアすぎ、中心が冷たいかなと思って、
今度は200度〜でreheat。

ところが！
今度はovercooked!

せっかくの肉が台無しに。

ほんの数十度の温度の違いが、かなり大きいと思い知らされた。

そして、いい肉は、かぎりなくレアに近い方がうまいと再確認。

これは絶対リベンジせねば。

次は、低音reheatで慎重に。
そして、red wine gravy,
以外にすごく安かったgrilled asparagus(50p)をもっとたくさんそえる。
Salmon roe on toastもいいかも。

赤ワインも用意だな。

ロンドンはメシがマズイなんて、
それは選美眼次第！
ロンドンのデパ地下はワンダーランド。

海外で、その場の感覚をつかむ方法はたくさんあると思うが、

特に良いのが、朝のワイドショーを見ること。

日本では、ほぼ一日中ワイドショーをやっているが、海外では、朝だけ。

特にクリスマス、ボクシングデイなどのイベントをチェックしたり、文化を学ぶのには便利だ。

イベントがない時は、少し間延びしてしまうかもね

PIPER HEIDSIECK BRUT

My first bottle of Sherry

アップルの同僚に、「Festive Food」を訊いていたら、ついでに言われたのがシェリー。

A wine master at Selfridges recommended this to me as the first bottle of Sherry for a beginner.

It tastes a bit similar to sweet Cinzano vermouth?

もともと甘い印象のあるシェリーだが、これはドライなので、ちょうどいいかも。

４、５日かけて飲んでよいのが便利。

Websiteも充実しているので、「有名なものを教えて」と言ったのが大正解！

Bonhams/ Sotheby's

One of my friends from Sydney visited London for her business trip.

She is working for Bonhams, which is the third biggest auctioneer after Sotheby's and Christie's.


It used to be a part of LVMH group. Wow!


She invited me to see her working at a big auction for Chinese art works.


In order not to embarrass her, I went there in a business suit, pretending to be a proper rich customer.


I was there just for ten minutes or so, but just in ten minutes, a surprising and funny thing happened.


One of the art works was estimated to sell for £3,000.

But the price went up sky high and became more than a quarter million pounds.

Coincidentally, I just scratched my head.

Then the auctioneer pointed at me saying 'A quarter million!' or something.

I was like, 'No! No! I'm not bidding for a quarter million!'.

Actually, the guy right behind me was bidding. LOL.

BTW, Bonhams charges 20% of the price as their fee.

They made 250,000×０．２０＝５０K literally in a minute. Wow.


ちなみに、同じストリートのすぐ近くには、Sotheby'sもある。さすがMayfair.

その中にある、Cafe at Sotheby's.にはぜひ行ってみたいところ。

Leon's Super Salad

以前も紹介したLeonのメニュー。

Broccolii
Feta
Quinoa
Sunflower seed
Petit pois
Mint
Cucumber
Avocado

自分でも似たようなものが簡単に作れるし、栄養バランスもよい。

イギリスでは、Frozen Petit Poisが格安でどこでも手に入る。
解凍するだけで、甘くてやわらかい。
普通のグリーンピーズとは全然違う。
便利！

Whiskey Tasting

職場の、iPadベースのイントラネットをチェックしていると、

同僚のDevinがSingle Malt Whiskeyを収集しているというのを発見。

すると、今度Whiskey Tasting をやるから 来いよ！と誘ってくれた。

行ってみると、かなり本格的。

きれいなHandoutまで作ってる！

しかも、プレゼンまで。

一本目。

Almondy, Green tea.

二本目。

Apple, Grape, Vanilla, Medium body, Fruit salad（なかなか面白いよね。Fruit Saladっぽいって）.

三本目は、日本でおそらく一番人気のマッカラン（日本的な発音では通じない）。

DevinはSherryっぽくて好きじゃないとのこと。

たしかに、他とは全然違う。ウイスキーっぽくない。

そして、４本目が、俺の一番のお気に入り。

Piña colada, Salt, sea air, Butter scotch.

これも、ウイスキーっぽくない。

こういう発見をいくつかすると、そのカテゴリーが好きになり、批評もできるようになるだろう。

５本目は、趣旨に反してブレンド。

６本目。

Salt、peppery、Fish、 caper。

Goes well with smoke salmon

７本目。

写真忘れちゃったよ。

Goes well with dark chocolate

てな感じで、初のWhiskey Tastingは、楽しくて勉強になった。

帰国前に、もう一度できるといいけど。
