?uestlove in London
9pm-4am Saturday 11th September 2010
Venue: East Village, 89 Great Eastern St, EC2A 3HX
First 200 tickets £8
Then £10 in advance (MOTD)
with DJs in the basement
?uestlove (3 Hour Set)
Spin Doctor (The Doctor’s Orders)
Eric Lau (Ubiquity)
& in the “Breaks Lounge”
Mr Thing (Extended Players)
DJ Lok
Chris P Cuts &
Deke Evergreen
Few names in music carry quite as much kudos of that of our headline DJ ?uestlove. There are few musicians, producers or DJs that can claim to have worked with such a phenomenal array of talent as this Philadelphia native while still leaving his own distinctive mark on each one. The list reads like a who’s who of modern Hip-Hop & Soul; Jay-Z, Al Green, Erykah Badu, J-Dilla, Common, Joss Stones & De La Soul to name just a handful. All this before we even mention the fact that he is the founding member & driving force of the world most respected Hip-Hop band The Roots who themselves are now eleven albums deep.
As a drummer he is a funky metronome that has brought to life so many incredible tracks that had originally been created through samples, drum machines and computers. Just check out his leadership of the ever morphing group of musicians that calls itself the “Illadelphonics” on Jay-Z’s unplugged album (Roc-A-Fella) and Madison Square performance in “Fade To Black” (Paramount) or at “Dave Chapelle’s Block Party” (Rogue Pictures) for an example of this. As a producer, both on his own and as part of the Soulquarians alongside J-Dilla, Q-Tip & Ali Shaheed Muhammad, his musical knowledge and understanding has seen him bring the classic Al Green sound bang up to date on “Lay It Down” (Blue Note) as well as get the very best out of performers like D’Angelo & A Tribe Called Quest.
He will be making the most of all of these phenomenal attributes as he blesses The Doctor’s Orders crowd to his only London DJ set of the year which will weave a beautiful musical web between current Hip-Hop sounds, 70’s Funk, 80’s Soul & beyond to wherever this musical colossus decides to go. When dealing with a man with as much musical knowledge, power & understanding as Amir ?uestlove Thompson there is only one thing to do; find your spot on the dance-floor and get ready for this incredible three hour set, his only London DJ gig of the year.
As ever The Doctor’s Orders have lined up an incredible cast of support DJs to help build the vibe and make sure that every minute of the night and inch of the venue are treated to a great sounds. Joining ?uestlove in the basement are The Doctor’s Orders own Spin Doctor for whom this night is the light at the end of the tunnel,
“We have had ?uestlove right at the top of our wish list of guest DJs from the start five years ago and despite getting close it has never quite came through, till now. There are few people that have made such a direct impact on what we play at our parties so to finally have him manning the decks is a real treat. I am so amped about this gig already!”
They are joined by one of London’s finest Soulful producers in the shape of Eric Lau who’s distinctive beats are matched by his DJ sets which are the perfect compliment to the night.
Upstairs in the “Breaks Lounge” meanwhile we have a quartet of the capital’s finest selectors all digging deep into their collections to provide a soundtrack entirely made up of original Soul, Funk & Disco breaks as sampled in the Hip-Hop, R&B & House classics that are such favourites with the knowledgeable and fun loving crowd for whom The Doctor’s Orders is home.
Few throughout the UK or even the world know more about how to sample and what has been sampled than the incredible Mr Thing who is sure to be giving thirsty ears plenty of edutainment. He is joined by two DJs whose reputations are growing with every set they play, DJ Lok & Chris P Cuts. While both staunch Hip-Hop fans they like nothing more than digging for those original breaks and are over the moon to have this chance to be showing the fruits of their labour. Making sure that everyone gets a warm musical welcome as they come through the doors is good friend of The Doctor’s Orders Deke Evergreen. As anyone who has been lucky enough to flick through the 45’s on the jukebox of his brilliant Clerkenwell boozer will attest his soul boy credentials are in no doubt so get ready for what is sure to be another phenomenal party!

Reco from the staffs of Apple Store in London
I take One to One lesson at Apple Stores in London, about once a week.
Every time I finish the session, I ask them what they recommend me to try in London.
The following is the rough list of it.
The problem is that I'm too lazy and not trying most of them.
And it's also not edited or organised well. So it's just a memorandum record.
But this kind of rough try would make a big difference in the future.

Tim Westwood / Ali G
I'd like to be like Ali G, maybe.
Maybe not.
Timothy Westwood is an English DJ and presenter of radio and television.
Ali G is a satirical (風刺の)fictional character invented and performed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.
The character of Ali G plays on the stereotype of a non-black suburban male who revels(楽しむ、凝る) in a mixture of American Gangsta Rap and Jamaican Black culture, particularly through hip hop, reggae, and jungle music;
though the actual ethnicity of Ali G's character caused confusion, with some believing him to be a Middle Eastern.
However, Baron Cohen stated that BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood was an influence on the development of the Ali G character
– Westwood hosts Radio 1's Rap Show and speaks in a faux (偽の)American Hip-Hop dialect.
Ali G's middle class credentials(信用証明物) mirror Westwood's: the latter was brought up in Lowestoft, Norfolk as a bishop's son.
Ali G non-standard grammar has been the point of ridicule(冷やかし) by at least one interviewee.
Claiming to be black and of Jamaican ancestry(先祖、家柄),
some of his catchphrases include
"Aight" (alright),
"Booyakasha",
"Big up Yaself",
"Wagwaan",
"West Side",
"Respek" (respect),
" For Real ",
" Punanee",
"Check It" and
"Keep It Real".
His trademark hand gesture is the dip snap.
He once defined the meaning of "Boyakasha" as
"Hear me now, bo, selecta, swallow back, holler, big up ya self, everything that I in, coming at ya like Cleopatra, come in a couple of bars, recognize, represent, keep it real, you gotta check ya self before ya wreck ya self, swallow back ... oh yeah, and hello".

Sky Ride

I have more than 1 month left.
Hope I wouldn't miss it just like I missed London Marathon.
The great thing about Sky Ride is it's your day,
so you don't have to start from any one particular point.
The route is open from 9.30am until 4.30 pm and you can cycle at any time during these opening times - you don't have to arrive for the start.
However, if you’d like some assistance in getting into the central route from your borough then take advantage of one of 50 free Guided Rides from across all London boroughs to the Sky Ride.
They're led by trained marshals who will ride at a relaxed easy pace, perfect for less experienced cyclists. Click here to book.
Barclays Cycle Hire
£45 / year. Sounds interesting.
Since bicycles are easily stolen in London, this might be one of the best options to enjoy bicycling.

Tesco's Apartment
If the big companies start to make the affordable apartments or accommodation,
that must be really successful.

I've been interested in this Cafe for a while.
But didn't know this is run by Time Out magazine.
Sounds very convenient!

Daily Mirror / 45p
A British tabloid newspaper.
The title on its masthead (題字、発行人欄) was changed to read simply The Mirror, which is how the paper is usually referred to in popular parlance (口調、業界用語).
The Mirror gained notoriety in the United States with its 4 November 2004 front page after the re-election of George W. Bush as President.
It trumpeted "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?".
The cover became a favourite of anti-Bush websites.
In this issue, it provided a list of states and their average IQ, showing the Bush states all below average intelligence (except for Virginia), and all Kerry states at or above average intelligence.
Beans, Nuts and Whole Food / Salads at Marks and Spencer
Squash, Lentil, Edamame Soya, etc. Sounds good.

Bob's your uncle
One of the typical british phrases, I guess.
I learned this phrase from the videos of Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver.
But, I don't have any uncle named Bob.

What's coming next to Apple? What's cool to do now?
Watching the old videos of Steve Jobs keynote and reviewing the recent history.
In 2004, I predicted Apple had huge potential to be successful and iPhone and iAd must have been coming,
(Using CLIE and talking about almost the same thing as iAd)
and was planning to quit my job and apply for Apple. I should have done that.
I was right in predicting the future or realising the potential of things or finding something cool.
But I missed all the chances just because I didn't follow what thought.
Definitely I should follow my heart from now.
Now I'm thinking, 'What's coming next to Apple? What's cool to do now?'
Making everything easy, entertaining, cool and in the global standard?
We may be able to call it 'packaging' ? Just like what Starbucks and Apple did.
Immigration, education and investing can be interesting for that?
Sports and fitness industry?
New concept for exercising? Just like Yoga became a huge industry?

NYT's The Minimalist
One of my favorite podcasts.
If they'd rather feature basic traditional recipes than 'interesting' or 'creative' ones, this would be way better though.
Some of my favorite recipes
; Water Soup
: More-vegetable-than-egg frittata
; Fish wrapped in romaine lettuce
: Fennel and Celery Salad
: Asparagus & Prosciutto Roll-Up Appetizer
; Agua Fresca
; Simple Sorbet
etc.

Casillero del Diablo CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2008
My personal tasting note ;
I feel this wine has two different layers.
One in the heavy tannin layer.
But it's not so heavy as Jacobs Creek Shiraz Cabernet which is one of my favorite wines.
This heaviness makes this wine good with the red meat and black pepper. Like Sirloin Steak.
The other is the fruity, sour, sweet and light layer.
But it's not too much and very delicate.
The combination of these two different layers makes it well-balanced and complexed.
Now it's one of my favorite wines.
And one more thing.
It's cheap, easy to find and you can this in small bottles. Very handy.

1GBP = 127 JPY now.
1 GBP used to be around 230 JPY 2 years ago.
Almost half now.
They may be printing a lot of GBP notes to create inflation or to reduce the debt on purpose.
They create huge profit and power to manipulate the currency exchange rates without real labor.
